Dialogue: A means to lasting and sustainable peace
By: A.A. Suleiman
From the onset, when the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), brokered the negotiations that lead to the release of Chibok girls who were held captive by the Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) for more than 3years. I celebrated with the abductees, their parents, Chibok community and Borno state people as a whole for the reunion of the innocent girls with their loved ones.
But however, i was thoughtful that the kidnapping business would be the most interesting venture for the BHT to dive in, in continuing their quest for reinforcement, the release of the girls most be in exchange of a handsome ransom, which might likely be; an exchange with frontline combatant, or a huge amount of money, or the withdrawal of military might in certain areas of BHT stronghold.
ICRC as a neutral entity is playing its roles in the most professional way, thereby gaining the trust of both the government and as well the insurgent group. Infact, ICRC would recieve a merit award coupled with more funding due to the excellent mediatory role it continued to play in releasing those in captivity.
Similarly, i had expected our nonentic authorities to explore the presence of ICRC to build on their in-abilities of brokering peace, as perhaps, may be bringing the insurgents onto a round table for an effective dialogue.
We most learn to call a spade, a spade, this war against BHT is long overdue, it most be brought to a definate end by all means, 3 successive administrations are still unable to end it.
The huge budgetry allocation on the Nigerian Military is not yielding the desired result, an almost a decade of continued operations, wasting the lives of our soldiers and putting the common man in suspense as to when exactly is this war coming to an end.
Consequently, very sad to mention the attention of the world, the government, the war facilitators has swiftly moved to #Dapchi of Yobe state, the kidnapping of more than 100 school girls broke the internet. I dont expect anyone to be surprised by the news, because common sense should tell us that BHT shouldn't just release the globally clamored Chibok girls on a platter of gold.
Like it or not, my opinion is pretty simple, BHT got reinforced by the ransom they recieved from the released Chibok girls.
If our authorities wouldn't wise-up and use the available avenues to negotiate for a lasting peace, then they would keep exchanging innocent lives with resources to fund terror.
I cry for #Dapchi girl.
